Oil Leaks Diagnosed

It's easy to tell that you have a leak when there are stains under your car after it has been parked for awhile. It is often more difficult to tell where the leak is coming from than to know that you have one. An even more difficult situation arises when your crankcase oil level keeps dropping and there is no visible external sign of a leak. Evidence of an internal leak can sometimes be present in the form of smoky exhaust. Timing Belts

The timing belt in your car synchronizes the opening of the valves with the pistons. Not all cars use timing belts but on those that do it is essential that they be replaced according to the manufacturer's recommendations. When the timing belt fails the best thing that can happen is that the engine stops running; the worst that can happen is that the engine fails catastrophically. See "Engines Replaced" below. Head Gaskets

The head gasket separates the cylinder head from the engine block and is the most important gasket in your car. An intact head gasket seals the cylinders to maintain compression and prevent the mixing of the fluids which flow through the engine. A leaking head gasket can cause low compression which can result in a loss of power or cause rough running. A leaking head gasket can allow coolant or oil to leak into the cylinders. The appearance of white smoke in the exhaust is often evidence of a coolant leak and dark smoke is in indication of an oil leak. A worse condition exists if exhaust gases are allowed to escape into the cooling system or coolant is forced into the oil. In both of these cases severe damage to the engine can result.
