| New Car Warranties and Routine Maintenance
Automobile manufacturers would like you to bring your car back to the dealer to perform routine maintenance, however they cannot require you to do so. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act (P.L. 93-637), which was passed in 1957 is the federal law that covers consumer product warranties. Among other things, the act prohibits tie-in sales provisions. Tie-in sales provisions require the purchaser to buy an item or service from a particular source in order to keep the warranty in effect. Tie-in sales provisions are only allowed if the manufacturer can prove to the satisfaction of the FTC that the product will not function properly without a specific item or service. Having routine auto service performed by someone other than a dealer will not void your warranty, its the law.
